Texans Coach DeMeco Ryans: 'It'll Be Refreshing' To Practice Against Dolphins
The Houston Texans are learning what every NFL team learns and re-learns every season about training camp.
As the days continue where Texans are hitting each other, they get the itch more and more to hit someone else.
It's an itch that even one preseason game can't fully satisfy, something Houston coach DeMeco Ryans acknowledged after a recent practice featured some tense moments between friendly forces.
"There was a little scuffle...it's not important, it's football. It's training camp and it gets a little testy and we're probably at our wits end of going against each other and so it's really good and it'll be refreshing to have Miami come in," Ryans said. "We're really looking forward to the joint practices...to get a chance to go against a different scheme, different people, it's coming at the right time for our group."
The three days of practice between the Texans and the Dolphins will give each side a true opponent to practice against providing as competitive a training environment as you can get in the NFL.
An added benefit to the event is that quarterbacks will get to see new schemes and looks like Ryans said, but they'll do it without the potential of injury as joint practices still protect quarterbacks from pass rush contact.
At the end of it all the two teams will face off for a preseason Week 3 matchup in Houston on Saturday in a game that many NFL teams have come to treat as their dress rehearsal for the regular season.
On the other hand, some NFL teams have also chosen to rest starters in the actual game, leaning on the practices to provide that week's game development and further reducing risk.
How the Texans and Dolphins choose to handle the game is to be determined, but either way we know both teams are about to get really good work in the week's practices, thanks to a little bit of teamwork and healthy competition.
