'Relentless Motor!' Texans Coach DeMeco Ryans on Will Anderson Jr. at Camp

First-round NFL Draft pick Will Anderson Jr. is doing well in Houston Texans training camp, according to coach DeMeco Ryans.
In this story:

The Houston Texans are hoping the investment made to their roster in this year's first round of the NFL Draft will lead to a franchise turnaround in the relatively near future.

One of those investments focused on improving the Texans' pass rush, specifically with defensive end Will Anderson Jr., who is already pleasing his coaches in his first NFL training camp.

"It's that relentless mindset of how he attacks each day," says coach DeMeco Ryans. "He comes out with a relentless motor. He plays with a physical mindset every play, and everybody around, they can just look at Will and see how we need to practice."

Part of what attracted many NFL Draft experts to Anderson was the presumed ability he can play both inside and out on Houston's defensive line, something Ryans said they'll address as needed in game-planning down the road.

For now, the focus isn't on Anderson as an individual, but how he folds into what the Texans are doing schematically, and how the pass rush works as a unit function.

"It's not ever about one person," Ryans said. "Will is doing a good job, but for us to be a good pass-rush team, it will take a complement of guys. It's more. It's not just four guys. I like to have eight, nine guys who can go in where the interior and the end guys [are]. We need everyone being dynamic, explosive, and collapsing the pocket, disrupting the quarterback."

The reasoning here? The better the Houston defensive line and pass rush do in camp, the more simulated exposure rookie quarterback C.J. Stroud will get to NFL pressure.

So one thing feeds the other, and if it mixes right then the Texans are looking forward to a new day where quarterback and pass rush combine to form a competitive team any in the NFL will be unhappy to face. ... with Will Anderson Jr. providing the "motor.''
