Texans' Will Anderson Jr. Pokes Fun At Dolphins For Sack: 'They Knew!'
The Houston Texans struggled for most of Saturday's 28-3 preseason loss to the Miami Dolphins, but rookie edge rusher Will Anderson Jr. shined in his limited number of drives.
On the Texans' third defensive drive, Anderson and defensive lineman Maliek Collins stormed to the Miami backfield and tackled running back Raheem Mostert for a five-yard loss near the goal line.
Anderson's reign didn't end there though. The third overall pick was unblocked on a second-and-10 snap and took advantage by bulldozing rookie running back De'Von Achane and sacking Skylar Thompson, who fumbled the ball but recovered immediately. The result of the play was a 14-yard loss thanks to the Alabama product.
An edge rusher being left unprotected doesn't come often in games, and just seeing the running back and quarterback in his way, Anderson was excited to burst off the line of scrimmage and make the play.
"They called the play, they knew what was gonna happen," Anderson laughed. "I just wanted to go out there and do my job and whatever the coaches tell me to do."
Anderson explained how he executed the sack.
"It was fun, but it just goes back to being disciplined, doing what my coaches are telling me to do: get off the ball, take two steps, climb up the field and be physical," Anderson said. "(Texans coach DeMeco Ryans) doesn't really care (what you do) as long as your being physical and fast."
Anderson has said throughout training camp that he wants other teams to see his elite speed and power. Anderson explained that scouts mainly focused on his speed during the NFL Draft period. Even though he wasn't guarded at the snap, he absolutely crushed Achane.
While the Texans' offense was practically stagnant throughout the game, Anderson explained that his sack and linebacker Denzel Perryman's interception provided a lot of momentum for the starting defense.
"I think that's what defense is all about—everybody making plays, having energy, jumping up and down no matter who makes the play," Anderson said. "I think we all feed off each other, so when one person makes a big play...we all feed off of it and it helps us gain momentum throughout the game and keeps us rolling."
