HOUSTON — Inside NRG Stadium Thursday night, the Houston Texans are currently leading the San Francisco 49ers 7-0 during the final week of the 2022 NFL preseason.

Rookie running back Dameon Pierce set the tone early for Houston's offense, leading the Texans on an 11-play drive, accounting for 37 of the Texans' 65 yards. Houston's first drive of the night ended with Pierce scoring the first touchdown of his pro career.

“We’ve seen everything you need to see from a good running back,” coach Lovie Smith said of Pierce Tuesday. “He can catch the ball. He can run in between tackles. He’ll make you miss in the open field. Pads down low, there’s a lot of things to like about Dameon.”

Outside of Pierce's on-field production, the Texans have been able to sustain their lead due to their defense. During the first half, Houston's front seven recorded two sacks and an interception by Desmond King.

Houston's defense made it a rough night for 49ers starting quarterback Trey Lance. Lance appeared during the 49ers' first three offensive drives, where he recorded 49 yards while going 7-for-11 from the field.

Davis Mills' first half echoed his modest production against the Los Angeles Rams, as he registered 37 yards while completing four out of his eight pass attempts.

With Brandin Cooks out for his third consecutive preseason game, Chris Moore has led Houston's wide receiving corps with 19 yards on one catch.
