'Schultz Will be Back': Texans Expected to Re-Sign Tight End
The Houston Texans are going to be busy this offseason, with multiple key players set to hit the free-agent market. However, it appears that at least one of those players has his sights set on a return.
According to reports from KPRC 2, there is a mutual desire between the Texans and tight end Dalton Schultz to continue working together, and he 'will be back" on the team in 2024.
While the Texans typically don't utilize the franchise tag, Schultz could be a candidate if a deal isn't reached by the upcoming deadline, with the tag costing $11.3 million.
Known for his reliability as a downfield target, Schultz amassed 59 receptions, 635 yards, and five touchdowns on 88 targets last season.
Following five seasons with the Dallas Cowboys, Schultz opted for a one-year deal with the Texans, where he emerged as the team's third-leading receiver.
With a whopping $70 million in projected cap space, as reported by Spotrac, the Texans have ample funds to potentially offer Schultz the substantial contract he sought last season.
Texans General Manager Nick Caserio emphasized the importance of factoring in the franchise tag's fixed value, calling it a negotiation starting point, "it’s a little cat-and-mouse game, so you just try to take the information in, have a general understanding of the market and try to make a good decision."
