The Houston Texans have continued to compete against legitimately good defenses. Late in the second quarter, they extended their lead over the New Orleans Saints, 17-7.

Rookie quarterback C.J. Stroud hit veteran receiver Robert Woods in the middle of the end zone for a score.

It was Stroud’s second touchdown of the game and a nice rebound from a rocky start. He’s up to nine completions on 16 attempts for 138 yards.

The touchdown came on third-and-goal from the six-yard line. It ended a drive that Texans fans certainly felt should have ended sooner. Running back Dameon Pierce ripped off a couple of “angry runs,” showcasing incredible leg drive and contract balance.

On the second one, a whistle blew earlier than fans would have liked and cut short the play a second before Pierce escaped the pile and would have scored a touchdown.

It was an inspiring drive for a struggling rushing attack that is yet to get going. Although the touchdown came through the air, it was one of the better rushing drives Houston has had to this point.

Pierce is up to 28 yards while running back Devin Singletary has rushed nine times for 53 yards. Woods’ score was his first target of the game.

Woods hasn’t been a mainstay in the box score, but it’s clear he is an important part of Houston’s plan on third down. It is no surprise it was the veteran who was targeted on a pivotal third-down snap.

Expect Woods to be targeted on more key downs as this one continues.
