Tennessee Vols Receiver Named “Ideal Team Fit” for Titans on Day Two of 2023 NFL Draft

NASHVILLE — The Tennessee Titans will need to attack the wide receiver position early and often in this year’s NFL draft and two of the best prospects available come from the Titans’ stomping grounds. While both Jalin Hyatt and Cedric Tillman from the University of Tennessee could make sense for the Titans, in a recent list from Mike Renner of Pro Football Focus, it’s Tillman matched up with the Titans as an ideal fit on day two of the draft.
The Titans could choose to draft a receiver on day one of the draft and maybe that would lead them to pass on receiver on day two, but with the dire need at the position, the Titans could choose to take two receivers within the first three rounds. Regardless of what path they take, Tillman makes a ton of sense for the Titans.
Renner explains why he matched Tillman to the Titans:
“The Titans' play-action-heavy offense is built to feature receivers with large catch radii over the middle of the field. No one fits that bill in the draft class better than Tillman. The 6-foot-3, 213-pounder is very reliable, went 19-of-32 in contested situations the past two seasons and has a 4.4% drop rate for his career.”
Renner is spot on in his thought process, fit wise. The Titans typically like to play in multiple tight end packages that have only one or two receivers on the field at the time and both of those receivers need to be able to block. Some Titans’ fans may be rolling their eyes right now, but it is a reality that needs to be accepted. The Titans won’t be rolling out a wide receiver in their most-used packages that is small in stature. Whether that is something that is a detriment to the team is up to each person’s opinion.
If we accept the type of receiver the Titans will gravitate to, then we can see why Tillman would be such a good fit. As Renner explained, Tillman checks a bunch of boxes that line up with what the Titans do. If Tillman is there at pick 41 or pick 72 or, of course, the Titans trade to get in a different spot in that range, the Titans would be smart to consider adding the in-state prospect.
