Titans Trade Up For QB, but Not First Pick in Mock Draft

In this story:
NASHVILLE — The Tennessee Titans have been sniffing around getting a new quarterback all offseason according to the rumors. If a recent mock draft plays out, they would be able to secure one in the draft while not giving up what is needed to get to the very top of the draft. It would be a best of both worlds situation for the Titans.
A mock draft from the33rdteam.com had the Titans moving up from pick 11 to pick six in a trade with the Detroit Lions. With the sixth pick, the Titans selected quarterback C.J. Stroud out of Ohio State. The move would make sense for the Titans as it gives them a passer of the future on a cheap rookie deal for four years, but also allows them to trade or release Ryan Tannehill. A move that would save $17.8 million and in the event it is a trade, could re-coup some of the picks given to Detroit in the move up the draft board.

According to the mock draft, the Titans would surrender picks 11 and 41 to get up to pick six. That is a far cry from the haul it would take to get up to number one in the draft. Also, earlier in the offseason new Titans' general manager Ran Carthon said on a podcast with retired NFL player Chris Long that his top two attributes for a quarterback were accuracy and anticipation. Stroud might be the best in the draft in those two areas. The fit with the player would be ideal and paying a much smaller price to get him could make the move incredibly enticing for the Titans.
The mock draft was created by a team of folks over at the33rdteam.com and this was the analysis provided in combination with the pick, “Mike Vrabel trades up and selects the Tennessee Titans‘ quarterback of the future from his alma mater. Pocket passer C.J. Stroud is a potential long-term solution at quarterback for the Titans.”
If the Titans were to leave the first round of the 2023 NFL Draft with a young, promising quarterback, the cap savings from a Tannehill trade and the picks received in a Tannehill trade, it would be hard to argue against it being a slam dunk for Ran Carthon in his first draft. The move would set the Titans up for a better roster and a much better future.
