Tennessee Titans QBs Malik Willis & Will Levis Will Alternate Entire Game, Willis Will Start
NASHVILLE — The Tennessee Titans take on the Chicago Bears in their first preseason game of 2023 today. All eyes will be on the quarterback battle between Malik Willis and Will Levis. According to NFL Network's Stacey Dales, the two will alternate every few series and Willis will be getting the start.
The Titans wouldn't publicly announce who would start at quarterback earlier in the week, but with Willis listed as the second quarterback on the depth chart, this was always expected.
What was more unclear is how the snaps would be divvied up and what the rotation would look like. There was some thought that Willis may get the whole first half and Levis would take the second, but it appears that is not the case. As Dales reported, the two will now alternate every few drives.
This indicates just how close the battle is between Willis and Levis. It may be just preseason, but these are critical games for the future of both players. Particularly for Willis, who could lose his roster spot entirely if he loses the battle for the backup spot.
As Dales also reported, starting quarterback Ryan Tannehill will not play. Another piece of information that isn't surprising as head coach Mike Vrabel rarely plays his starters ,much, if at all, in the preseason.
The Titans know what Tannehill is and can do, there is much more mystery with the young quarterbacks, so it does make sense to prioritize their evaluation over Tannehill's. With it being a brand-new offense for the Titans this year, we may briefly see Tannehill, but it wouldn't be until the last preseason game of the year in two weeks.
We now know exactly what to expect from the quarterback rotation and it is time for the Titans to go out there and execute. With so much on the line, it will be fascinating to watch unfold.
