Titans make move to address still-unsettled offensive line
One day before the start of the regular season the Tennessee Titans are no better off than they were on the first day of training camp.
They still don’t know who will start at right guard Sunday against the Cleveland Browns.
Saturday, the Titans promoted Aaron Stinnie (pictured) from the practice squad to bolster their depth on the interior of the offensive line. Stinnie (6-foot-3, 312 pounds) made the active roster last season as an undrafted free agent out of James Madison but played in just one game.
Wide receiver/returner Kalif Raymond was waived to make room on the roster.
The moves were a reaction to the fact that Kevin Pamphile missed practice Thursday and Friday with a knee injury. Pamphile was listed as questionable on Friday’s injury report.
Following the preseason, coach Mike Vrabel said Pamphile was the likely starter at right guard but was not exactly definitive in doing so. Josh Kline started the last 46 games at right guard but the Titans released him in March (Kline is now with Minnesota) and created a competition that has yet to be settled.
“We haven’t made any decisions that are final before we all go and run with that,” Vrabel said a little more than a week ago. “We’re always going to be making sure that we’re doing what’s best for the team. Again, that’s where we left the last preseason game. A lot of things could change.”
If Pamphile can’t go, Jamil Douglas is the most likely candidate to take his place. A fourth-round pick by Miami in 2015, Douglas played all 16 games and started six (four at right guard, two at center) as a rookie but has appeared in just one regular season game since. In the past two seasons he has spent time with New England, Atlanta, Indianapolis and the Titans.
Another option is third-round draft pick Nate Davis, but Davis did not play in the preseason because of his own injury issue.
“I would probably say he’s behind,” Vrabel said of Davis. He missed four weeks, so we have to make that time up. … I thought (Douglas) played with great effort, good finish, was able to play center and guard. [He is] a good versatile backup.”
Sunday, he might be a starter.
