Avoiding the Anxiety: Jeffery Simmons Contract Saves Titans Fans Stress
NASHVILLE — The Tennessee Titans begin their offseason workout schedule today and one of the annual dramas they won’t have to deal with is the offseason “holdout.” In what is a move we see every year, different players who want a new contract will skip team activities and get the media to drum up unnecessary drama. Whether you think these types of situations are worth paying attention to or not, Titans fans have to feel good that they won’t have to hear about Jeffery Simmons in this kind of news.
Simmons got his deal done with the Titans last week. Simmons got a four-year extension from the team for $94 million. While Simmons probably won’t come to early activities anyways, his name and his status with the Titans won’t be debated by every talking head in the football ecosystem either. That can’t be said for some of the other top players at Simmons’ position.
First, take the status of Dexter Lawrence from the New York Giants. Another excellent interior defensive lineman, but he has yet to get a deal done with his team and now all the news is about Lawrence skipping workouts. Reported by Pat Leonard of the New York Daily News, Lawrence will not be in attendance as the two sides try to find a deal. Maybe they work one out, maybe they don’t, but what has to be nice for Titans fans is not having to be in this position.
Second, we have Quinnen Williams of the New York Jets. According to Tom Pelissero of the NFL Network, Williams won’t report to team activities, something he has said since the end of the 2022 season, and no matter how high the optimism is that a deal gets done, this will be all that is talked about in the New York media cycle today in regards to the Jets. It is never a fun place to be as a fan.
Finally, we have Christian Wilkins from the Miami Dolphins. We have yet to see reports that Wilkins is not reporting to team activities, but odds are those reports will be coming soon. At this time, all the reports indicate Wilkins is in deep negotiations with the Dolphins on a deal, but having a contract dispute as your team’s top news item can create severe anxiety.
All of this is meant to make one thing clear, thank the heavens for Ran Carthon getting the Simmons’ extension done when he did. Not only did it help the Titans with the price tag, but it saved the fan base from needless anxiety and stress. Sit back and relax, Titans fans. All you have to do is worry about the NFL draft.
