NASHVILLE — The Tennessee Titans have been shopping running back Derrick Henry according to a report from last week’s NFL Combine coming from Michael Silver of Bally Sports. Henry was one of three veteran stars included in the report.

The NFL Combine is a breeding ground for whispers and buzz each year. All of the decision makers in the NFL gather in Indianapolis, Indiana where they share information, have pertinent discussions and generally bump elbows in a unique way that doesn’t happen any other time on the league calendar. This leads to a wave of reports, rumors and scuttlebutt in the weeks following.

One of the big reports coming out of the combine puts Titans’ star runner Derrick Henry in the spotlight. There have been some whispers about a potential Henry trade in the past, but nothing has come out that has been as concrete as what we got from Silver on Sunday evening.

In an article Silver pointed out what he was hearing, “According to my sources — all of them current general managers — Tennessee Titans running back Derrick Henry, Los Angeles Rams cornerback Jalen Ramsey and Arizona Cardinals receiver DeAndre Hopkins are among the players who’ve been shopped in recent days.”

The trade market for Henry would be a tough one to navigate. Henry is set to hit the salary cap for $16 million this season, but his salary is only $10 million. A team trading for Henry would only have to take on the salary, but a $10 million contract for a running back is still high.

On the other hand, Henry is still a dominant back. Henry ran for over 1,500 yards and scored 13 rushing touchdowns this season while setting career highs for catches and receiving yards. He is still an all-pro level player that could entice a team that feels they are one great player away from a big run. The compensation considering all those factors would be interesting to see.

If the Titans do decide to trade Henry, the fan base will be understandably upset, but it would signal the Titans truly are going into a full rebuild and that may be the best course of action at the moment.
