REPORT: Tennessee Titans Have “Lost Faith” in Malik Willis
NASHVILLE — The Tennessee Titans and the rest of the world have entered draft week. Things are about to get crazy as rumors and reports come out fast and furious. The latest is from Peter King of NBC Sports who put out a mock draft that had some interesting Titans’ nuggets in it including an update on how the franchise feels about second-year player Malik Willis. According to King, the Titans have “lost faith” in Willis.
In the mock draft that this piece of information was taken from, the Titans move up in a trade to the third pick and select CJ Stroud, the quarterback from Ohio State. While explaining the trade and the pick, King gave us what he has heard about Willis and how the Titans are feeling about him.
“And the Titans, who I hear have lost faith in Malik Willis, might be in a unique position here. Coach Mike Vrabel is tight with Ohio State coach Ryan Day. Vrabel will get the real about Stroud from Day, and I think that real will be mostly positive. And Vrabel will be a good coach for Stroud.”
King goes into more detail about the trade and the selection, but this excerpt about Willis is what the focus should be on right now. We don’t know if the Titans will make that trade or even if Stroud falls past Houston, but the nugget about Willis is something that matters. The writing has been on the wall though, so maybe this shouldn’t be a surprise.
Last year, instead of getting Willis valuable reps at the end of a disaster season, Vrabel benched Willis for the last two games of the year in favor of journeyman quarterback Josh Dobbs. The move didn’t result in any wins, but it did take precious time away from Willis. At that point, we should have all realized what was happening.
Now, the Titans have been all over the rookie passers in this draft and if they felt confident in Willis becoming something that may not be the route they chose to go. Also, new general manager Ran Carthon had no involvement in the Willis pick. If Vrabel is out on Willis, which it seems like he is and the general manager doesn’t feel any attachment, it would make sense the Titans would be out on Willis as an organization. This report from King seems to confirm what was already a logical conclusion.
Willis should still get a chance to go to training camp and if the Titans stick with Tannehill, Willis will get an opportunity to win the backup job, but even if he gets that shot, there is a real chance he is cut before the season starts if Willis doesn’t perform in training camp. If this is Willis’ last summer in Nashville, always remember the time he was benched for a practice squad player who joined the team a week prior as the moment we should have all known it was over.
