Rumors Continue On Henry, And Now Byard
NASHVILLE - Sometimes rumors are just that, rumors. Other times those rumors turn into reality.
Such is the case for Tennessee Titans fans, as rumors have been rampant of late about the possibility of a trade involving fan favorite and the team's best offensive player, Derrick Henry.
While nothing is imminent and might never reach that point, the persistence of this rumor has fans and the media on a constant watch for anything that might give a clue as to what the Titans are thinking regarding their superstar and likely future Hall of Fame member.
After all, the former Heisman Trophy winner has been the focal point of this franchise's offense, rushing for 8,335 yards and 78 touchdowns in just seven seasons. Included in that total are his 2,000-yard season and an NFL record-tying 99-yard touchdown run against Jacksonville.
No measure is high enough to describe the fan's love of Henry.
On Wednesday, former NFL executive Michael Lombardi said this about Kevin Byard on his podcast.
"Kevin Byard, he's really a good player; they're trying to get him to take a pay cut. If he doesn't take a pay cut, they're gonna cut him."
Again, nothing of this nature has been made public by the Titans but considering Lombardi's connections to the league, there is no reason to doubt his contentions.
Though it wasn't stated previously, it should be no surprise that under new general manager Ran Carthon, and in the wake of other cost-saving cuts, Byard's name might be included.
Like Henry to the offense, Byard has been one of that unit's leaders and heart and soul player. It is hard to imagine him no longer being on this roster.
However, in this ever-evolving NFL world, these are the kinds of things that eventually happen with aging star players. Teams look to move them while they still have value.
Of course, given the request, it sounds like Byard has been given and his team mentality; he could agree to restructure his contract to convert some base pay into signing a signing bonus, allowing him to remain with the team.
Time will tell what the future holds for these two Titans stars, but based on the social media comments surrounding these possibilities, fans' reaction if one or both go won't be pleasant.
