Ryan Tannehill’s Trade Value Increases as Raiders Sign Jimmy Garoppolo
NASHVILLE — The Tennessee Titans may not be interested in trading Ryan Tannehill, if they are, the Raiders just did the Titans a favor. The Raiders will be signing quarterback Jimmy Garoppolo and, more important than anything, taking Garoppolo off the market for other quarterback-needy team.
If the Titans do look to trade Tannehill, the teams who would be interested are now in clear focus. Obviously, the big domino here is Aaron Rodgers, but if Rodgers decides to retire, Tannehill’s value on the trade market goes up even higher. Rodgers is expected to join the New York Jets if he comes back to play, but imagine for a moment that Rodgers does walk away.
The Jets would be desperate for a veteran passer and all of their top choices, Rodgers, Carr and Garoppolo, would be unavailable. That would mean a player like Tannehill would be a prime target. Not only the Jets, but teams like the Washington Commanders, Tampa Bay Buccaneers and Atlanta Falcons all could be interested in Tannehill as all of them, maybe with the exception of the Falcons, are not in range to draft a quarterback who they can count on as a starter.
If there are teams that need a veteran quarterback, Tannehill instantly becomes the top option. Not only could Tannehill be in demand, but there could even be a bidding war for his services. More demand means increased trade value. Could the Titans garner a multi-pick package for Tannehill? No one can know, but the odds are certainly higher now with Garoppolo on the Raiders.
The question that comes immediately after a Tannehill trade is what do the Titans do at quarterback at that point. Honestly, it may not matter. The Titans could be staring at a rebuild and a season in 2023 that does not have them be very competitive.
Saving money on Tannehill, collecting draft picks and setting yourself up for a great draft pick in the 2024 NFL Draft where the quarterback prospects are supposed to be game-changers, may be their best move. That could include Malik Willis, Josh Dobbs or a cheaper quarterback like Carson Wentz or Sam Darnold as the starter. All possibilities need to be on the table.
