Tennessee Titans Acquire K Nick Folk in Trade with New England Patriots
The Tennessee Titans are trying to form their initial roster and with that comes a wave of roster moves. We see cuts or players placed on injured reserve, but it is also a time for trades and the Titans used that method to solve their kicker issue, trading with the New England Patriots for kicker Nick Folk in exchange for a 2025 seventh-round draft pick according to multiple reports.
Folks is a long-time veteran in the league with a 15-year career. The 38 year old will be kicking for his fifth team after spending time with the Dallas Cowboys, New York Jets, Tampa Bay Buccaneers and the Patriots.
Folk is has a career conversion rate of 82.9% on his field goals and 96.8% on his extra points. In 2022, Folk made 32 of his 37 field goals, going 4-5 from 50 yards or longer and even hit a 54-yarder. Folk may still have some leg at his age.
The real issue with Folk is kickoffs. Folks only kicked for a touchback on three of his 33 kickoff attempts. Some of that has to do with the Patriots' strategy, but some of it also has to do with Folk's leg strength.
The other reality here is Folk was beaten out by a rookie in Chad Ryland. The Titans will be using draft capital in future years to obtain a kicker off another team's scrape heap who got beat out by a rookie.
The Titans desperately needed a kicker after missing on Caleb Shudak, Trey Wolff and Michael Badgley this offseason, but it is a risky move to give up draft picks for a kicker that may not provide any more security than what you already had.
The pickings were slim though and the Titans chose to secure their kicker rather than have to bid for one on the open market in the coming day. We will all see if Folk is the answer shortly.
