NASHVILLE — If the Tennessee Titans are serious about contending in 2023, they need to address the wide receiver position in a big way between now and the start of the season in September. One huge move they could make would be making a trade for DeAndre Hopkins. According to a recent report, they are one of a handful of teams that are interested in doing so.

NFL Insider Benjamin Allbright gave some insights in a recent mailbag and discussed the market for Hopkins. He listed a few teams that not only have interest, but also have the capital to make a deal happen. Take a look at what Allbright had to say.

“Teams I’m told are interested with the possible capital to pull off a trade for Hopkins include (but are not limited to) the New England Patriots, New York Giants, Tennessee Titans and Atlanta Falcons,” Allbright explained.

Hopkins does make a ton of sense for the Titans if, in fact, they want to win the most games they possibly can next season. So far this offseason, you wouldn’t be able to tell for certain whether that is truly what the Titans want to do. There have been rumors about getting rid of their best players like Derrick Henry, Kevin Byard and Ryan Tannehill.

The Titans also have only given out free agent contracts to backups who have the potential to be starters, but it would take a great deal of optimism to think the Titans will be correct on all of those bets. Not to mention, the deals we have seen the details on so far indicate the Titans are only giving out one season worth of guaranteed money. The Titans are showing they don’t have much faith in these signings as long-term answers either. It could be construed as a half-hearted attempt to compete that could realistically turn into a tanked season.

Hopkins would be a definitive signal of this team’s intentions to win. The future hall-of-famer has put up 853 catches for 11.298 yards and 71 receiving touchdowns in his career. The Titans could desperately use that production. However, fans are right to be skeptical. Hopkins has not been the best version of himself for a few years now.

Hopkins only played in 10 games in 2021 due to injury and only nine games in 2022, mostly due to a suspension. Paying picks and a new contract to a 31 year old wide receiver with injury issues may give Titans fans some Julio Jones-PTSD. On the flip side, a three-headed monster at wide receiver of Hopkins, Treylon Burks and, say the Titans draft a receiver at pick 11 in the NFL Draft, Jaxon Smith-Njigba would be a huge and meaningful remodeling of the receiver group. It would be fair to get excited about that potential.
