Vrabel Ranks In NFL Top 10 For Longest Tenure Among Head Coaches
NASHVILLE - While NFL officially stands for the National Football League, some have suggested it also could mean not for long, as most players and some coaches don't remain in the league for long.
However, current Tennessee Titans coach Mike Vrabel has bucked the odds to become a bit of a lifer at the highest level of professional football.
Following a 12-year career as a player with Pittsburgh, New England, and Kansas City, Vrabel is now entering his sixth season as the head man in Nashville, and that puts him in the top 10 coaches according to the tenure of current head coaches.
Bill Belichick tops the list, having been the head man in New England for 23 years. He's also won more Super Bowl titles than any other coach in league history.
Pittsburgh's Mike Tomlin, with 16 seasons at the helm of the Steelers, currently holds the second-longest active tenure with the same team.
John Harbaugh has led the Baltimore Ravens for 15 seasons and comes in with the fourth-longest tenure.
Pete Carroll, like the three above him, have all won Super Bowl titles during his 13 seasons at the top of the Seattle Seahawks.
Likewise, Andy Reid, fresh off his second championship-winning season in Kansas City during his current ten-year run at the top of the Chiefs Kingdom, making him the fifth longest-tenured head coach.
Sean McDermott has yet to claim a Lombardi Trophy during his six seasons in Buffalo, where he ranked as the sixth longest-tenured coach on this list.
Kyle Shanahan's six seasons in San Francisco earn him the seventh spot in the top 10, where he becomes the second on the list without a championship title to his resume.
Sean McVay also has a Super Bowl championship to his credit during his six campaigns leading the Los Angles Rams.
At No. 9 stands Vrabel, who, through his first five seasons, has yet to make or win a Super Bowl but will likely continue forward as the Titans head man for the foreseeable future, despite any challenges the coming season provides.
While it's not hard to believe, it doesn't seem as if it's been five seasons since Vrabel took over and began a run of four consecutive playoff appearances prior to last season's issues. Still, it's almost time to begin season number six with Vrabel at the helm of the Titans.
