King Sees Titans As Bottom Of Mid-Tiers Teams In 2023

Peter King is one of the more prominent names in the national media covering the NFL, so his rankings come with some clout. He currently ranks the Tennessee Titans near the bottom of his middle tier.

NASHVILLE - Opinions on the current state of the Tennessee Titans entering the 2023 season vary depending on who and when you find them, but for many fans, and those of us in the media who are paid to share our opinions, there are some opinions which we hold in higher regard.

Peter King is one of those for me, and having had the opportunity to meet and spend time talking with King a few years back, it cemented my opinion of his knowledge of his subject matter.

Now that King has released his preseason team rankings, I was interested in seeing what the Football Morning In America writer had to say of the Titans as they stand.

Beginning at the top, King has Philadelphia as the lone team he describes as "Can't Find A Weakness," or teams in a class of their own.

The defending Super Bowl champion Kansas City Chiefs head the second group of teams in the "They've got Super Bowl vibes" category, including Cincinnati, San Francisco, and Buffalo.

King describes the next group as "They're on the border." Detroit surprisingly heads this group, including Baltimore, Miami, New York Jets, and Dallas.

The Titans fall into the "If all goes right" category as the No. 18 team behind the Giants, Seattle, Jacksonville, Minnesota, L.A. Chargers, Pittsburgh, and Cleveland.

Despite my high opinion of King and his work, I don't see the Titans as the current 18th-best team in the league.

While they are not in the bottom rungs of "They've got holes," "Under construction," and "Wait until 2025," the Titans, in my opinion, more closely resemble a team with holes.

The Titans are currently a puzzle in that they don't appear to be too far behind the Jaguars, who are the defending AFC South champs, which King ranks 13th, but are also not far from the Colts, who stand at No. 26 in these rankings.

This is a crossroads moment for the Titans, as they have little chance of making any meaningful run toward a championship but could rise toward the middle of the league or fall closer to the floor.

As we draw closer to training camp and the season, some of the unknowns about this team should begin to come into focus, and perhaps then we can better gauge what might be in store, but for the moment, I have to disagree with King that has this team a little higher than they should be at this moment.
