What The Addition Of DeAndre Hopkins Mean To The Tennessee Titans Receiver Depth Chart
NASHVILLE - DeAndre Hopkins will soon be a Tennessee Titan, as news of his decision and pending signing broke early Sunday afternoon, as first reported by Doug Kyed, the managing editor of Patriots content for AtoZSports.
Both Russini and Ian Rappaport have indicated that the deal from the Titans is for two years, $26 million, with incentives that could reach $32 million for the former Pro Bowl wideout, who became free-agent after being released by Arizona earlier this offseason.
As for the Titans depth chart at wideout, Hopkins's addition is an immediate boost to one of the most scrutinized position groups on this team and arguably around the entire league.
That depth chart now contains Hopkins, who will likely assume the No.1 receiver role, moving second-year pro-Treylon Burks to the No.2 spot, where fellow second-year wideout Kyle Phillips and veteran free agent addition Chris Moore now form what could be considered a solid core group.
After the top four, there will now likely be increased pressure and competition among the bottom portion of this roster to remain with the team.
Nick Westbrook-Ikhine, is likely safe and sold in his new role as the likely No. 5 receiver, while rookie seventh-round selection Colton Dowell, because of his drafted status, seems like a good bet to grab another spot.
That means that Mason Kinsey, Racey McMath, and the undrafted rookies will be battling for any other possible spots on that 53-man roster, though in recent years, head coach Mike Vrabel and his staff have gone with six wideouts, which will likely be the case again this season.
The addition of Hopkins does two things for this Titans team.
One, it gives them a solid, respected option that will help to keep defenses more honest when Ryan Tannehill throws, and two, it gives them a legitimate veteran presence and voice amongst the players in this position group.
While there will need to be work done for Hopkins and Tannehill to become comfortable working together, this will also provide the veteran quarterback with a true top target while allowing Burks, a former first-round selection himself, to play a more complimentary role as his career, hopefully, continues the upward trajectory he has shown of late during the offseason program.
