Hassan Haskins Arrest And Pending Court Date Not Ideal For His Future With Titans
NASHVILLE - In the wake of Hassan Haskins’s arrested on June 22cd, the second-year Tennessee Titans running back is potentially facing more than just possible jail time.
Haskins and his live-in girlfriend Makiah Green became involved in a physical altercation where Metro Nashville Police arrested Haskins for felony domestic violence/strangulation. One day later, the couple became involved in a second incident where Green was arrested.
Haskins’s court date has been set for August 30, one day after the Titans and the rest of their NFL brethren must make their final roster cuts to meet the 53-man roster requirement.
While Haskins’s court date will fall after those final cuts, his future with the Titans seems up in the air now.
After an initial comment from the Titans that read, “We are aware of the situation and gathering additional information,” there has been no further comments from either the team, general manager Ran Carthon, or head coach Mike Vrabel.
A special teams standout, Haskins, who will report to training camp on July 25 with the rest of his Titans teammates, must produce a stellar training camp, then hope that he can avoid serious consequences on the legal front if he is to remain on this roster.
If convicted as a first-time offender, Haskins could be treated as a Class A Misdemeanor in Tennessee. The maximum jail sentence he could face is less than a year and up to $200 in fines. Additionally, the defendant must also surrender any firearms. In certain cases, the defendant could also be required to participate in an alcohol or drug treatment program, a counseling program to address anger issues or a batterer’s intervention program.
Should he be convicted of a domestic assault charge, the penalties could be more punitive.
A new state law that took effect On July 1 the punishment for domestic assaults involving strangulation in Tennessee increased potential penalties.
Senate Bill SB 0213/HB0248 establishes a 30-day minimum sentence for attempted strangulation or domestic assault involving strangulation. Additionally, if the victim loses consciousness, the assailant could face a possible first-degree murder charge or attempted second-degree murder instead of aggravated assault.
There were no indications in police reports obtained by AllTitans.com that Green lost consciousness during the incident.
