Titans Training Camp Tidbits From First Day One on Wednesday
NASHVILLE — The Tennessee Titans concluded their first training camp practice on Wednesday, and there were some positives to be seen as the team picked up where they left off following the break after the conclusion of OTAs.
Here are some of the highlights.
DeAndre Hopkins: The biggest story of day one was the first team practice for Hopkins with his new teammates. He appeared to move well and seemed to have a burst of the snap still. When the ball hit his hands, it stuck. Of course, he's still learning the playbook and developing chemistry with Ryan Tannehill, but the quarterback's first pass of the day went to No. 10, much to the surprise of no one.
Left Tackle: As we reported in another story, Jamarco Jones took first-team reps at left tackle, followed by undrafted rookie John Ojukwo and second-year undrafted Andrew Rupcich. Jones, a six-year veteran, held his own on day one, including one impressive rep versus Jeffery Simmons, where Jone stoned him on the pass rush.
Kicking Competition: Both Caleb Shudak and Trey Wolff were perfect 5-5 on the day, with each connecting from 31, 36, 41, 43, and 46 yards.
Wesco Sighting: Free agent tight end Trevon Wesco didn't practice during OTAs but was on the field on Wednesday and made one of the best catches of the day as he was turned around, backpedaling, and stretched up to grab a pass as he fell backward to the ground.
Landry Moved Well: For the first day back, coming off a season-ending knee injury in 2022, Harold Landry practiced without a knee brace and looked quick and moved well. So far, so good, but time will tell how far he has returned in his recovery.
Quarterbacks: All three quarterbacks had good days on day one, as each made some nice throws and sound decisions. There was a short period of seven-on-seven and a team session, where none of the three had any passes intercepted.
Cat Quick Arden Key: We saw why the Titans moved to sign Key in free agency during OTAs, but the former LSU pass rusher needed to show us again on Wednesday. He is electric off the snap, with amazing first-step quicks. He got into the backfield early, pressured Tannehill, and might have had a sack in live action.
Kristian Fulton: The cornerback, absent from practice during most OTAs, was around the football a lot on day one. He looked quick and ready to go and should only improve as camp progresses. His question mark is staying healthy and on the field. Side Note- Fulton had a collision with Hopkins early on in practice as the receiver made the grab near the sidelines with Fulton close in coverage.
Derrick Henry: The King is still big, still fast, and looked ready to roll, as always.
And finally, there's a new category that began inn the media room following today's session. It's a measure of the mood of the head coach.
Mike Vrabel Mood Index Day One: Excellent.
