The Tennessee Titans lost on the road in Week 5 against a divisional rival in the Indianapolis Colts. They did so while getting bullied in the trenches on both sides of the ball and playing against the Colts backup backfield.

Throughout the lead up to the 2023 NFL, the Titans didn't have a lot of national buzz, so after their performance through five weeks, it is no surprise to see them falling quickly in the general rankings. A big win against the Cincinnati Bengals in Week 4 earned them some confidence, but that seems to have been quickly lost.

NFL Network - Eric Edholm: Tennessee Titans - 23rd

"The Titans' seesaw season continued with another road loss following Week 4's home victory; they're now 0-3 outside Nashville. If there was a shocking takeaway from Sunday, it was that Indianapolis bullied Tennessee and kind of beat Mike Vrabel at his own game. Losing both lines of scrimmage while also losing the turnover battle and going 1-for-4 in the red zone is a tried-and-true path to defeat. I'd argue it was less stunning that Derrick Henry and the ground game stalled; we've seen that happen before. But what about the Titans' vaunted run defense? It was steamrolled by the Colts, who almost netted more rushing yards (193) in this game than Tennessee allowed in the previous three games combined (211)."

A seven-spot drop for the Titans. Only the Las Vegas Raiders rank lower as a 2-3 team. Both teams the Titans have beaten rank ahead of them and honestly it is hard to argue against it.

ESPN: Tennessee Titans - Tennessee Titans - 23rd

The same exact ranking for the Titans as our first from ESPN's group list. The Titans are actually ahead of two 2-3 teams in the Raiders and the New York Jets. tough company for the Titans based on some of their own preseason expectations.

CBS Sports - Pete Prisco: Tennessee Titans - 17th

"The defense had a rough day against the Colts. That was surprising. At 2-3, it's not been a great start to the season. Now they face a tough game against the Ravens in London."

Prisco has been higher on the Titans than any other ranking almost every week of the season, so no shock here. The Titans still sit above the teams they've beaten in the Cincinnati Bengals and the Los Angeles Chargers.

The Athletic: Tennessee Titans - 24th

"The splashiest addition of the offseason, wide receiver DeAndre Hopkins (who was added through free agency) is 15th in the NFL with 356 yards on 26 catches. First-round pick Peter Skoronski won the starting left guard job in Week 1, but he missed three games after an emergency appendectomy before returning Sunday. Third-round running back Tyjae Spears has 156 yards on 27 carries, but second-round quarterback Will Levis has been a disappointment thus far, failing to push Ryan Tannehill for the starting job and slipping to third team at times."

The lowest ranking we have seen for the Titans so far. There was only a four-spot drop though, so not like the Titans were well regarded by the Athletic's staff coming into the week's rankings.

Bleacher Report: Tennessee Titans - 22nd

"If there was a bright side to the loss, it's that wide receiver DeAndre Hopkins had easily his best game as a Titan, catching eight passes for 140 yards. But the Titans continue to be one of the more inconsistent teams in the league—and that inconsistency has made it very difficult for them to establish any real positive momentum."

The Titans place in these rankings has been rather consistent. Somewhere in the bottom ten or 12 teams in the NFL seems fitting and fair at this stage. The Titans are one loss away from needing to ask themselves some serious questions.
