Titans Film Room: Will Levis Delivers Miami Miracle on Monday Night Football
The Tennessee Titans saw their rookie quarterback pull off a miracle on Monday Night Football against the Miami Dolphins. Will Levis led to the Titans to a victory in regulation after being down by 14 points with less than three minutes left in the game. Something that had not been done in the previous 767 attempts.
Not only that, but Levis set a record for the most passing yard by a rookie in Monday Night Football history. Levis went for 327 yards, completing 23 of his 38 passes for one touchdown. Levis showed intensity and toughness throughout, but his performance at the end of the game was truly unbelievable to watch.
Part of that is the way that Levis did it. Most know Levis for the beautiful deep balls or the insane velocity he throws with, but the way Levis led this comeback was with his mind. Levis didn't hit a bunch of big throws on the final two drives. He simply took what the defense gave him and let his playmakers do their job.
Again, this may not seem too impressive, but in Levis' first few starts, he was obviously trying to find a balance between the deep ball and the check down. In the comeback against the Dolphins, he seemed to strike the perfect balance.
We saw dump offs to Tyjae Spears quite a bit, but also a few to Chig Okonkwo. Not plays that require a big arm, but perfectly executed for quick and easy gains. Levis also made mental wins, like reminding Treylon Burks to back off the line of scrimmage to not draw a penalty on a critical second and long that went for 19 yards.
When Levis needed to though, the arm was live and ready. Levis hit a big throw to Nick Westbrook-Ikhine on a throw that set up the Titans' first of two final touchdowns. He also delivered a great pass on the first play of the final scoring drive to DeAndre Hopkins going across the field.
Levis' touchdown throw to Hopkins was maybe the most beautiful play of them all as Levis escaped the pocket while drawing multiple Dolphins defenders before hitting an open Hopkins who was vacated by the defenders tracking Levis.
Again, it wasn't just the arm talent, it was the intelligence, the resilience and the toughness that won this game. Finding the balance in his decisions that could unlock his game. It was all over the tape and hopefully it continues.
