NASHVILLE — The Tennessee Titans’ offseason program began on Monday and it was a bit surprising to see veteran quarterback Ryan Tannehill in attendance. Not because of all of the rumors surrounding his job security, but mostly because veterans of his stature aren’t always present at these voluntary activities. However, if you look a bit deeper, some key reasons for Tannehill to be at these voluntary workouts emerge quickly. Let’s take a look at three important factors to Tannehill’s participation.

Tannehill’s Ankle

It seems like a long time ago now, but Tannehill did finish the season injured and did not play in the final three games of the year. Tannehill also missed time earlier in the season as well due to an ankle injury. While the expectation always was that Tannehill would be healthy by next season, to see him involved in these activities this early is a great indicator that he is much healthier now after having time off. Some fans may want this team to tank for a draft pick in 2024, but if you are someone who wants to see the Tannehill-led Titans have one more shot, Tannehill’s health is paramount.

Potentially New Offense

Based on some things Mike Vrabel has said throughout the offseason we can assume the Titans are not doing a complete overhaul of the offensive scheme even with Tim Kelly being promoted to offensive coordinator. It doesn’t appear to be a restart. Vrabel’s comments indicate the Titans will be looking to tweak the offense and add some elements that Tim Kelly likes without scrapping the outside-zone and play action scheme they have used the last five seasons. Even if that is the case, Kelly will certainly be adding new plays and some new philosophy. Tannehill is a professional and being present this early will help him master and changes to the playbook that may have happened.

Job Security

Ryan Tannehill has smelled the smoke too, folks. The Titans have been scouting the college quarterbacks coming out in the draft heavily. They have attended pro days for the top prospects and even had meetings with certain guys. The Titans were also, whether true or not, one of the team connected to veteran quarterbacks in the rumor mill. The Titans are clearly looking at other options at the position and if Tannehill wants to keep a firm grasp on the Titans’ quarterback spot, it wouldn’t hurt to remind the team what he can do as a player and as a leader in the locker room.

So, whether it be proving he is healthy, learning new elements of a revamped offense or simply reminding his bosses what he can do, Tannehill being present at the first day of offseason workouts sends a message and is important. Tannehill should feel like this is his spot and based on his attendance we can see he is clearly taking every possible step to ensure he keeps it.
