NASHVILLE - Free Agency is the first step in the roster-building process for NFL teams; it will help set the table for the directions teams take in the draft. It also means that general managers and head coaches have some tough decisions to make as to who to resign and who to allow to walk away to sign with other teams.

For new Titans GM Ran Carthon, the list of current free agents is a long one, and so today, we put on our G.M. hats and share our opinion on who the Titans should resign and those we'd wish well moving forward.

Players To Definitely Resign

RG Nate Davis: Starting guard, likely to command a nice payday on the open market, something the Titans won't likely match. Still, it would be worth resigning him if the price is right.

LB David Long: A stalwart on the Titans' defense, Long is one of the top targets this team should look to resign. His figures will be higher than his last contract, but I don't forsee him breaking the bank, though there's always a team ready to overpay.

DL Teair Tart: A solid defensive lineman who is part of the depth of that position. He's not likely to draw huge F.A. dollars.

TE Austin Hooper: While Hooper wasn't overly productive, given the offense's issues, he should be a reasonably priced player whos the second-best tight end on the roster.

LS Morgan Cox: He's a Pro Bowler, and long snappers don't often break the bank.

DL DeMarcus Walker: Put together a solid season as another depth piece of the defensive line.

RB Dontrell Hilliard: A nice change of pace back to pair with Derrick Henry. While two players in the draft would likely be upgrades, it's a safe bet to resign Hilliard beforehand if selected.

QB Joshua Dobbs: An intelligent, veteran quarterback who can step into a tough spot and adequately deliver. He, along with whoever is the starter, would be a good mentor for Malik Willis.

Resign Only After Looking For Upgrades

CB Lonnie Johnson Jr.: Drafted by the Texans, Johnson Jr. was an adequate backup with some potential upside. He, too, won't break the bank, and if an upgrade is available, hDa'Shawn releasedLe'Ravenamp.

LB Dylan Cole: Cole was a solid contributor to a unit that saw its share of injuries. He's never going to be a star, but you can use a hard-nosed guy like him on the back end of this unit.

CB Terrance Mitchell: This is a spot where upgrades are needed, but Edwards, like Johnson Jr., are going to be cheap, and if you can upgrade, fine; if not, they are back-of-the-unit depth pieces.

DL Mario Edwards: Another depth player who, if an upgrade is found, can be released, but his price should be a good fit for the budget, and his production in the rotation was good last season.

DB Joshua Kalu: Again, depth. See above.

DL Naquan Jones: See Above.

Adios, Arrivederci, and Sianara  CO

As for the rest of the Titans' free agents, best of luck in your future, though some of them may be back on the actual roster because there might not be a better option available.

Conclusion

The Titans must have a good haul in free agency, be it resigning their own or upgrading with new faces, and they must make the most of the limited number of draft selections they have if they're going to transform this roster.

I'm certainly not in the habit of making excuses, and this isn't one. Still, with the number of free agents, the limited number of draft picks currently in the Titans' possession, and how much upgrading is needed, this might not be a one-year process to get back to the top of the mountain.
