Titans TE Chig Okonkwo a Member of 2023 'All-Underrated' Team
NASHVILLE — The Tennessee Titans will need some significant contributions from pass catchers outside of the wide receiver room this season and one of the primary options will be tight end Chig Okonkwo. Okonkwo got his career off to a strong start in his rookie season and continues to get recognition for what he could do going forward.
Maurice Moton of Bleacher Report put together a 2023 "All-Underrated" team and Okonkwo was selected to the team's tight end position. Okonkwo had a fantastic year in 2022 and should have a big opportunity to get the ball in 2023 based on the lack of talent at the previously mentioned receiver position.
Here is a piece of what Moton had to say about his selection of Okonkwo:
"Burks garnered the spotlight as the possible replacement for Brown, but Chigoziem Okonkwo had a little more production in the passing game, catching 32 passes for 450 yards and three touchdowns compared to the former's 33 receptions for 444 yards and a score."
Moton is correct that Okonkwo outproduced Burks, but he also goes on to admit that Okonkwo had more games to do it. Either way, the Titans will need both of these players to step up in their second season if they hope to reclaim the AFC South.
It is true though that Okonkwo gets less immediate thought than Burks when folks talk about the Titans. Obviously, Burks is a first-round pick and has to deal with the shadow of A.J. Brown. That's why it is fair to say Okonkwo is underrated.
On top of his impressive statistical totals, Okonkwo was explosive while putting them up. He led NFL tight ends in receptions of 40 yards or more. That sort of burst and production combined with a potentially much healthier Titans' roster could make for an even bigger year for Okonkwo. He may just end the days when he was underrated.
