Carnell Tate Reaffirms Titans 'Fast and Violent' Mentality Ahead of Preseason Brawl With 49ers

Carnell Tate is backing up the Tennessee Titans "fast and violent" identity after a fiery joint practice.

If the Tennessee Titans' joint practice with the San Francisco 49ers was any indication of what their preseason matchup is going to be like, we could be in for a real heater. Punches were thrown and two players were ejected (both from Tennessee's camp). After the intense run, Carnell Tate was asked if the clash served as a "reality check" for Tennessee.

"It didn't feel like a reality check at all," Tate responded quickly. "We went out there and proved to them who we are... We're the Titans, we came here to play fast and violent." Tennessee's X account took the quote and ran with it and, voila, we have our table dressing for Thursday night's opener.

Beyond the entertaining optics, however, lies a mindset that seems to have permeated the entirety of this Titans team. Keen fans will remember Robert Saleh using "fast and violent" to describe his hopes for Tennessee, all the way back in January.

The phrasing has been used a few times since, but with the beginning of the season so near, it seems like Tennessee is actually beginning to implement it. Those words were present on the field yesterday, no doubt.

Tate repeating them once again confirms that this Tennessee team is prepared to bring the fire.

The Titans are Playing by Robert Saleh's Fast and Violent Mantra

Given the Titans' struggles in yesterday's practice, this may seem like a moot point at first. Who cares how you think you're playing if you're actively being outplayed?

Yet, there may be some merit yet in Tennessee taking on such an aggressive mindset. Titans fans aren't all that far removed from Brian Callahan's most recent team; one that was criticized again and again for their distinct lack of fight and grit.

Tennessee's shutout loss to the Houston Texans in week four, 26-0, epitomized those failures. The entire point of bringing in a new leader was to do away with Callahan's failures on the sideline. It may not be such a bad thing to embrace this squad's self-imposed identity, even if they're not yet out of the rebuilding phase.

Assuming yesterday's practice reports were as telling as they seemed, the 49ers will have the upper hand in the preseason opener. But this is the first Titans team in a while that may benefit from having a hill to climb. In fact, they may even prefer it that way.
