Adam Thielen Ruled Out For Thursday Night's Game Against Redskins
Vikings wide receiver Adam Thielen has been ruled out for Thursday night's game against the Redskins, the team announced Wednesday afternoon.
Thielen injured his hamstring on a 25-yard touchdown reception in the first quarter of last Sunday's victory over the Lions. He was quickly ruled out for the remainder of that game.
The MRI results from early this week didn't create much concern for Thielen's status long-term, but the team clearly feels like it's the safe move not to rush him back on a short week.
At Tuesday's practice, Thielen expressed hope that he would be able to play Thursday, but also that he understood the nature of the quick turnaround.
"Just trust in the trainers and the people in this organization," Thielen said. "Obviously I have a lot of faith and trust in them. I’m doing whatever it takes and they’re doing whatever it takes to try to get me to play and if the doctors and them think it’s probably not smart to play, then that’s the way it is."
By missing Thursday's game, Thielen will snap a streak of 90 consecutive games played (including playoffs) since starting his career in 2014.
"As a competitor, as an athlete, you want to play," Thielen said Tuesday. "You want to be out there to be able to help your team win. But at the same time I have a lot of confidence in the guys in that room, Bisi [Johnson] and those other guys, Tready [Laquon Treadwell] and those other guys have stepped up, and you saw it in the game. When I went out, they went out and scored four straight touchdowns, so obviously like I said we have a lot of confidence in the guys in our room and on this offense.”
With only three receivers other than Thielen on the active roster, the Vikings are promoting Davion Davis from the practice squad. He will take the roster spot of punt returner Marcus Sherels, who was released on Tuesday. Cornerback Mike Hughes will take over as the primary punt returner.
Thielen has 391 receiving yards and six touchdowns through the season's first seven games. He is coming off of Pro Bowl appearances in 2017 and 2018.
The Vikings and Redskins play at U.S. Bank Stadium at 7:20 p.m. on Thursday night.
