Schefter: 49ers Didn't Have Trade Talks With Teams on Trey Lance

It sounds like the idea of the Vikings trading for Lance never had any legs to begin with.
In this story:

One potential solution to the Vikings' uncertain future at quarterback that was floated this offseason — not reported, just floated by outsiders — was a trade with the 49ers for Trey Lance. The 2021 No. 3 overall pick, who happens to be a Minnesota native, is second or third on San Francisco's depth chart at QB, leading to speculation about a possible trade.

According to Adam Schefter, there was never any momentum towards a Lance trade this offseason.

"There really was never a lot of interest in Trey Lance," Schefter said on The Pat McAfee Show. "For what they gave up and what they'd get back, which is not very much at all, it doesn't make sense to trade him. There was no trade market and Kyle Shanahan has said that they didn't have any trade talks with teams. He's not going anywhere right now."

It's true that the 49ers gave up a lot to move up for Lance in the 2021 draft and that they wouldn't get much back if they traded him now. No team understands the value of depth at the position more than the 49ers, who had their season end in the NFC championship game because both of their quarterbacks got hurt.

But then again, Schefter told McAfee that not only does the job belong to Brock Purdy if he's healthy, he believes Sam Darnold has the edge on Lance for the No. 2 role heading into training camp. Are the 49ers really going to let a former top-three pick play out his entire rookie contract without at least getting something back in a trade? With Lance entering year three, that's starting to become a possibility. The return would only be diminished next year if he doesn't see the field much or at all this season.

Trading for Lance, in theory, could've made some sense for the Vikings this offseason. Instead, they'll have to look elsewhere next offseason at the QB position.
