Vikings Add Veteran Offensive Lineman Dan Feeney as Interior Depth
The Vikings have signed veteran offensive lineman Dan Feeney, who will provide valuable depth on the interior in 2024. He replaces Austin Schlottmann, who signed with the Giants, as an important backup who can play center or guard.
Feeney, who turns 30 in a couple months, was drafted out of Indiana by the Chargers in the third round in 2017. He started the final nine games of his rookie season at left guard, then held that role for all 16 games the following year. Feeney again started all 16 games in 2019, with 14 coming at LG and two at center. In 2020, the Chargers made him their full-time starting center.
In retrospect, maybe the Chargers shouldn't have had Feeney start 57 games for them over four years. After posting a solid 60.8 PFF grade as a rookie, he earned grades below 52 in each of the next three years. And since leaving the Chargers in 2021, Feeney hasn't been a full-time starter for anyone. He spent two years as a backup with the Jets and then was with the Bears last year, playing fewer than 400 total snaps across those three seasons.
Feeney has spent most of his career playing left guard and center, but he's also seen brief action at right guard and as a sixth offensive lineman. He figures to be the Vikings' backup center in 2024, with Blake Brandel first in line as the backup at both guard spots. The Vikings still need to figure out who their starting LG is going to be, whether that's Dalton Risner or someone else.
As a bonus, Feeney has a pretty sweet mullet/mustache combo.
