Vikings Re-Sign OL Brett Jones
The Minnesota Vikings have re-signed offensive lineman Brett Jones, the team announced on Tuesday afternoon.
Jones was waived last week to make room for wide receiver Josh Doctson. That Jones was the player waived was somewhat surprising at the time, as he was excellent in the preseason for a team without much proven depth on the interior of the offensive line.
However, it appears that the plan all along was for Jones to come back. According to multiple reports, the team never even cleaned out his locker. Jones was a vested veteran, so he did not have to go through the waiver process (where any other team could've claimed him).
To make room for Jones on the 53-man roster, the Vikings waived undrafted rookie tight end Brandon Dillon. They also released kicker Chase McLaughlin from the practice squad, creating an opening for Dillon or someone else.
Left guard Pat Elflein struggled against the Falcons, and first-round center Garrett Bradbury had an up-and-down performance. Jones is primarily a center but could play guard if needed, so he provides valuable depth behind those two players and right guard Josh Kline.
The other guards on the roster are rookie Dru Samia and veteran Dakota Dozier. The Vikings have Kyle Rudolph, Irv Smith Jr. and Tyler Conklin at tight end, plus David Morgan on the PUP list.
