Vikings/Trey Lance Trade Rumors Have Returned, Courtesy of Rich Eisen
We're at the point of the NFL offseason, before things actually start happening, where all kinds of assorted rumors are flying around. One of the latest ones surrounding the Vikings' uncertain quarterback situation comes via Rich Eisen, who is bringing back the Trey Lance-to-Minnesota idea.
"I heard this rumor (at the combine), that a possible solve at quarterback for the Minnesota Vikings is a native of the state, and his name is Trey Lance," Eisen said.
Here we go again. There was plenty of buzz last offseason about the Vikings and Lance, who are easy to connect because of where he was born (Marshall, MN). Ultimately, he was traded from the 49ers to the Cowboys for a fourth-round pick in August. Lance spent the season as the QB3 in Dallas behind Dak Prescott and Cooper Rush, but just had his $4.25 million roster bonus picked up for 2024.
"I'm just wondering if the Vikings flip 'em a (third-rounder), a Friday night pick," Eisen said. "Do they go ahead and do that?"
That's...a bizarre question. Not only do the Vikings not currently possess a third-round pick in this year's draft, why would Lance get traded this offseason for more than he got traded for last offseason? He didn't play a single snap in 2023 and is now entering the final year of his rookie contract.
It's possible that the Vikings have always had some interest in taking an upside swing on Lance, the No. 3 overall pick in 2021 who has just 102 regular season pass attempts to his name. If Kirk Cousins leaves this offseason, maybe the Vikings explore the idea of acquiring Lance and seeing what he's got as part of a competition with a couple other quarterbacks. But it seems rather unlikely, and if it did happen, Minnesota presumably wouldn't give up anything more than a fifth-round pick.
