The Sabres-Rangers game scheduled for Friday in Buffalo has been postponed due to the ongoing snowstorm in Western New York, the NHL announced Thursday. No makeup date was announced.

Lake-effect snow has impacted the Buffalo region since Tuesday. The area south of the city has been hit hardest, with some areas buried in five or six feet of snow and two to three more feet expected Thursday night. Eight people have died as a result of the storm.

Driving bans are in effect over much of the area, causing the NFL's Buffalo Bills to cancel practice for the second straight day Thursday.

The Sabres played against the Sharks on Tuesday night, but Buffalo forward Patrick Kaletawas unable to get to the arena because of the snow.

The women's basketball team from Niagara University spent 30 hours stranded on a bus before being rescued.

The Bills and the NFL are evaluating whether or not Sunday's game against the Jets should proceed as scheduled. New York governor Andrew Cuomo said it would be "impractical" to play the game on Sunday.
