Steven Stamkos gets misconduct penalty after stick goes into stands

Tampa Bay Lightning center Steven Stamkos received a 10-minute misconduct penalty against the Boston Bruins after his stick broke and he tossed it towars the Lightning bench. Part of the stick landed in the stands.

Tampa Bay Lightning center Steven Stamkos received a 10-minute misconduct penalty against the Boston Bruins after his stick broke and he tossed it toward the Lightning bench. Part of the stick landed in the stands. 

A misconduct penalty is assessed any time a player unintentionally or accidentally throws his stick or part of his stick outside of the playing surface, per NHL rules

Because of the penalty, Stamkos had to sit out of the game's shootout as well. The Bruins won the game 3-2 via the shootout. 

NHL player safety will review the stick toss, and Stamkos could potentially face further discipline. 

The Lightning host the Winnipeg Jets on Saturday.
