Stars forward Jamie Benn to play in preseason game against Blues
After undergoing surgery on both hips in the offseason, Dallas Stars forward Jamie Benn will play Tuesday in a preseason game against the St. Louis Blues, the team announced Monday.
Benn, 26, first had surgery on April 27 and underwent a second procedure one week later to repair cartilage damage and correct bony growth on his femur.
Benn is Dallas's captain and the reigning Art Ross Trophy winner, which goes to the NHL's leading scorer.
On the final day of the 2014–15 season, Benn recorded a hat trick and an assist against the Nashville Predators to finish the year with 87 points (35 goals and 52 assists), and capture the award over New York Islanders center John Tavares.
Also returning to the Stars on Tuesday is forward Ales Hemsky, who, like Benn, had hip surgery in the off-season. Hemsky recorded 11 goals and 21 assists last season.
The Stars have missed the playoffs in six of the last seven seasons.
Dallas hosts the Pittsburgh Penguins on Oct. 8 to begin the 2015–16 campaign.
