New York Rangers defenseman Kevin Klein strained his abdomen in his team’s 4–3 victory against the Carolina Hurricanes on Monday night, head coach Alain Vigneault told reporters.

Klein exited the game in the first period and did not return.

Before Monday’s game, the 30-year-old Klein was promoted to the team’s top defensive pairing with Ryan McDonagh in place of Dan Girardi.

Despite the loss of Klein against the Hurricanes, the Rangers were able to end a three-game losing streak, as they scored four goals on their first 12 shots on net.

Vigneault announced earlier on Monday that center Derek Stepan is out 4–6 weeks after sustaining two broken ribs on Friday against the Boston Bruins.
