Vancouver Canucks defenseman Dan Hamhuis sustained a fracture to his face during Wednesday’s game against the New York Rangers, the team announced Thursday.

Hamhuis suffered the injury after taking a shot to the face from Rangers defenseman Dan Boyle. He is set to undergo surgery on Friday. No timetable for his recovery has been established.

Following the game, coach Willie Desjardins said the defenseman had taken a shot to the upper part of his mouth and had lost some teeth, calling the injury “scary.”

Hamhuis is in the final season of his six-year contract with Vancouver. He has four assists in 27 games this season, averaging over 19 minutes on the ice.
