The Montreal Canadiens have signed forward Paul Byron to a three-year contract extension, the team announced Tuesday.

Byron is now signed through the 2018–19 season.

“A fast-skating and versatile forward, Paul has been an important addition to our team. He can contribute on the offensive side while being responsible defensively,” Montreal general manager Marc Bergevin said in a statement.

Byron was originally a sixth-round pick of the Sabres in 2007. He was traded to the Flames in 2011, and claimed off waivers by the Canadiens in October 2015.

MUIR: Available deadline talent may land rare first rounders

In 40 games so far this season, Byron has recorded eight goals and three assists for a total of 11 points. He averages just over 13 minutes of ice time per game.
