Before the New Jersey Devils drop the puck on the 2017-18 NHL season, they’ll have made sports history.

The team unveiled the largest in-arena scoreboard in the world at the Prudential Center in Newark on Friday, ahead of its season-opener against the Colorado Avalanche on Saturday afternoon.

The scoreboard weighs in at 88,041 pounds, covers 9,584.9 square feet and contains over 29 million SMD pixels for fans’ viewing pleasure—the equivalent of 1,300 50-inch TV sets. Comparatively, the scoreboard  the Barclays Center at 3,550 and the Pepsi Center at 1,296. The four main screens are made up of 20 individual displays, which can be used to create one large wrap-around screen or be divided into separate screens. It’s 60 feet wide and 38 feet tall, and players featured on the scoreboard will appear four times larger than they actually are.

The four-story tall scoreboard created by Trans-Lux will “put Newark on the international map, where it belongs,” said Hugh Weber, the Devils' President.

Prior to the Devils' new addition, the largest scoreboard in the NHL belonged to the Red Wings' Little Caesar's Arena, which saw its first regular-season NHL action on Thursday.
