Marc-Andre Fleury Re-Signs With Wild, Plans to Retire After 2024-25 NHL Season
Veteran goaltender Marc-André Fleury hasn't reached the end of his esteemed playing career just yet. The 39-year-old agreed to a new one-year contract with the Minnesota Wild on Wednesday, the team announced.
Fleury will return to the Twin Cities on a deal worth $2.5 million, according to Frank Seravalli of the Daily Faceoff. It will be the goalie's last campaign in the NHL, as Fleury also announced he intends to retire after next season.
"I'm grateful to keep doing what I love for one more season," said Fleury after extending his stay with the Wild. "It's good that this is settled and we don't have to talk about it for another year. And next year will be last, also."
The 2024–'25 season will be Fleury's 21st NHL campaign and his fourth with Minnesota. Last year he appeared in 39 games, making 35 starts and registering a .895 save percentage. The mark was the worst of his career but certainly still serviceable. He surrendered 2.98 goals per game, his most since '16–17.
Fleury was the No. 1 pick in the 2003 NHL Entry draft by the Pittsburgh Penguins, and he made his debut during the '03–'04 season. He spent 13 seasons with the Penguins and won three Stanley Cups with the organization.
The legendary goaltender has also spent time with the Vegas Golden Knights and Chicago Blackhawks, though he appears destined to end his career with the Wild.
Fleury ranks second all-time among goaltenders with 561 career wins, and could move into second all-time in games played with 21 appearances next season.
