NY Islanders' Victor Eklund Correctly Named Among Top 50 NHL Prospects

Victor Eklund has been recognized as a bright spot for the future of the New York Islanders' franchise, with the right winger having been included on a recent important list showcasing the top incoming talent of the NHL.

There is little doubt that Victor Eklund is a budding talent for both the NHL and the New York Islanders.

In a corresponding fashion, Scott Wheeler of The Athletic put out a list of his top 100 drafted league prospects. Now, this list does feature the usual top names among League prospects such as Gavin McKenna, James Hagens, Cole Hutson, Michael Misa, Berkly Catton and Gabe Perreault — but Eklund's name is also featured prominently at No. 43. In particular, Wheeler would dictate Eklund's ranking was due to his high hockey IQ which is also paired with a competitive nature.

Eklund comes right in between Konsta Helenius at No. 42, and then Ryker Lee (No. 44) on the prospect list; the ranking comes as Eklund now looks forward to his first full professional season in North America.

Eklund's ranking comes after the 19-year-old right wing originally made his NHL debut on April 14th following the signing of his entry-level contract on July 14. His first career point came against the Carolina Hurricanes on an assist for fellow-Islander Bo Horvat's 300th career goal.

Eklund Correctly Recognized as Bright Spot for Future of NY Islanders

Eklund previously said that he's beginning to gain a better understanding of the Isles' organization as he has gone his second year of Development Camp with them.

“Great time hanging out with all the fellas. I’m having so much fun already,” Eklund said per a recent article from NHL.com. “Good practice, now I know a lot of people, not everybody, but more than last year. It feels more comfortable.”

In addition to being recognized for his League potential due to what he's already shown on the ice — recent reports have also indicated that Eklund is beginning to be trusted in serving as a mentor figure role for the Isles, specifically with fellow-Swede and 2026 selection Malte Gustafsson.

Currently, Eklund's efforts are also dialed in on personal improvement,

“I just want to be better at everything coming into next season,” Eklund said. “I still have lots to learn. It’s important to all be a team here even though we’re all fighting for a spot. We’re learning and getting to know everybody.”

In addition to his recent efforts, Wheeler's list would also note Eklund's speed, body positioning and intuition — also specifically noting his size of 5'11", weighing 169 pounds. While his size was listed, so was the fact that his motor and determination easily constitute for a long and successful career.

Eklund spent his offseason training with longtime friend and 2025 selection Calle Odelius, and has his sights set on success in 2026-27.
