Getting captain Sidney Crosby signed to a contract extension has been one of the most talked about topics surrounding the Pittsburgh Penguins. It’s been the Penguins’ front office’s top priority since he became eligible at the start of July, but still no deal has been signed.

Crosby’s superstitions are well known, and many began to assume an announcement of an extension would drop on his birthday. August 7 came and went, and nothing happened. What’s the holdup? Is there a snag in negotiations?

According to Rob Rossi of the Athletic, there are no obstacles or roadblocks, just a good level of comfort from all parties involved.

“Crosby has told close friends he intends to re-sign with the Penguins,” Rossi writes. “Agent Pat Brisson and Penguins hockey president/general manager Kyle Dubas are largely aligned about details of a new contract.”

A source has told Rossi that there are “no issues at all” between the Penguins and their captain, who is focused on training and preparing for the 2024-25 season.

Rossi notes that negotiations are on pause so everyone can take some downtime and enjoy a summer vacation. Once things resume, however, it shouldn’t take long to put pen to paper.

“Negotiations could wrap quickly when talks resume.”

Everyone involved is confident a deal can and will get done. Even the ownership group, Fenway Sports Group, has made a Crosby extension a top priority.

“The actual money is ‘not an issue,”’ according to Rossi.

Crosby’s new contract will be designated as a “35-plus” deal, adding a few minor hurdles that likely shouldn’t be an issue for one of the sport’s Mount Rushmore faces.

Early projections have guessed Crosby will sign a three-year extension worth around $10 million annually. That would be a raise from the $8.7 million he’s earned since he was 21 years old.

Even though he’s 37 now, the expectations are still sky-high for Crosby. He has a chance to make history if he has one more 100-point season in him.
