Kyler Murray Named Vikings Starter: Is He Fantasy Football's Top Quarterback Sleeper?

History has proven that Kevin O'Connell's offense might net elite results for his starting quarterback.

In no-surprise news, Kyler Murray has been named the Minnesota Vikings' Week 1 starter at quarterback. The 29-year-old veteran wins the job handily over JJ McCarthy. He now takes over an offense that has all the upside in store, given its depth chart and the head coach's endorsement. Where does this bring his fantasy football ranking? Let's discuss.

All along, Murray has been expected to earn this job. For that reason, his ranking is unchanged with the latest news report. He slots into our projections as the QB18, sandwiched between CJ Stroud and Jared Goff, two pocket passers.

The good news is that Murray has a very high ceiling. Yes, he has been deemed a bad quarterback at times. Murray also has the raw athleticism that can be leveraged for good results in a coaching job, making it a net positive.

Kevin O'Connell enters year five as the Vikings' head coach. Previously, he was the offensive coordinator with the Rams in 2020-21. He then came from the now-branded Washington Commanders, where O'Connell coached under Jay Gruden, and the legendary quarterback came Bill Callahan, who took over after Gruden was fired.

There is no question that O'Connell is a quarterbacking mastermind. He has done as good a job as any at coaching up the position in his coaching career.

In 2024, O'Connell revived Sam Darnold's career, throwing for a career-high 4,319 yards and 35 touchdowns. Darnold went on to sign with the Seattle Seahawks in 2025, and he won the Super Bowl.

In 2023, Kirk Cousins passed for 291 yards per game before averaging, then got injured midseason. In 2022, Cousins passed for 267.5 yards per game in O'Connell's debut season as head coach.

When O'Connell coached up the Rams offense in 2020, Jared Goff passed for 263.5 yards per game. The case study findings are quite obvious — O'Connell gets yards out of his quarterbacks.

Now entering the 2026 NFL season, O'Connell's newest project is to turn Murray into the former MVP candidate that he was. Murray will have at his disposal: Justin Jefferson, Jordan Addison, Jauan Jennings, and TJ Hockenson. Some would be wise to call this a top-5 wide receiver room in the league.

Our latest projections have Murray passing for 210 yards per game, averaging 22.9 total touchdowns and 13.6 interceptions. Given O'Connell's historical results, that projection can easily be labeled as low. We list these projections given that the power index rates the Vikings' offense as the 24th-best in the NFL.

In an offense of high variance, Murray is still a great fantasy football selection as a quarterback backup, and even better as a sure-fire starter in 2-QB leagues.
