MotoGP News: British Grand Prix To See Significant 2025 Change
The 2025 MotoGP calendar sees a significant shift with the British Grand Prix moving from its usual August slot to the end of May. This change was announced during the weekend at Silverstone, where Enea Bastianini triumphed, with Jorge Martin and Francesco Bagnaia completing the podium in second and third places, respectively.
The British GP, which has been held in early August since 2022 after previously occupying a late August slot at Silverstone since 2013, will undergo a change aimed at attracting more fans by moving outside the British summer holiday period. Consequently, the 2025 event will take place from May 23-25 at Silverstone as part of a refreshed race calendar for MotoGP.
The change in date means that the race at Silverstone will clash with next year’s Formula 1 Monaco Grand Prix and the Indianapolis 500, creating a significant scheduling conflict that could impact viewership and attendance for motorsport fans.
However, Carmelo Ezpeleta, CEO of Dorna Sports, revealed that MotoGP aims to attract more fans even though the new date remains outside of the holiday period, given his confidence about the sport's "strong trend of positive growth." As reported by Motorsport.com, he said in a statement:
“As part of what will be a new-look 2025 calendar for us in some ways, we’re excited to celebrate the British GP at a different time of year outside the holiday period giving even more British fans the opportunity to come to Silverstone.
“As everyone knows, MotoGP is enjoying a strong trend of positive growth for audiences and crowds around the world. We want to ensure this event, in a key market, gets the platform and exposure to enable it to play an even bigger role in that.”
The British Grand Prix isn't the only event to change on the 2025 MotoGP calendar. The Indian Grand Prix returns to the MotoGP calendar in 2025, following Dorna's successful negotiation of a three-year contract extension with the government of Uttar Pradesh. The event, scheduled after the season opener in Qatar, aims to avoid the region's extreme weather conditions, promising a more comfortable experience for riders and spectators alike.
The move comes after the inaugural Indian GP in 2023 was shortened by three laps after MotoGP riders requested adjustments due to the hot and humid conditions in September. However, with the 2025 race now scheduled for March, temperatures are expected to be comfortably mild with lower humidity levels, ensuring more favorable and consistent racing conditions for both the riders and their teams.
