Ferrari Quietly Retires SF90 Stradale, Successor Already in Development

Ferrari last week provided an update on the current availability of some of its models in a statement coinciding with the release of the company's financial results for the first half of the year. The company revealed that the Roma coupe and limited-edition 812 Competizione are approaching the end of their respective lifecycles, while the SF90 Stradale and 812 GTS have both been phased out.

It seems like only yesterday that Ferrari introduced the impressive SF90 Stradale, a supercar that challenged the LaFerrari hypercar in terms of power and performance. It was the first Ferrari to get a proper plug-in hybrid drivetrain, which utilized three electric motors paired with a twin-turbo V8, churning out intense numbers such as 986 BHP, and a 0-62 MPH time of 2.5s.

Ferrari highlighted that deliveries of the high-performance SF90 XX Stradale have recently begun, yet the standard SF90 Stradale and the 812 GTS have now been phased out. The press release, as reported by Motor Authority, did not address the SF90 Spider, so it is expected to continue production for the time being.

Although the SF90 Stradale has been retired quietly, Ferrari is already developing its successor, which was spotted testing in August 2023. While specifics remain scarce, it’s anticipated that the replacement car will feature an updated version of the SF90’s powertrain, potentially retaining the 4.0-liter twin-turbo V8 and the three electric motors.

The retirement of the 812 GTS and the upcoming phase-out of the 812 Competizione was anticipated following the debut of Ferrari's 12Cilindri, which marks the successor to the 812 V12 grand tourer line. Unveiled in May, the 12Cilindri includes both coupe and spider variants, with the spider set to directly replace the 812 GTS. The 812 Competizione, a limited-edition model launched in 2021, as a final tribute to the 812 series, is also nearing the end of its production run, as Ferrari has indicated.

Ferrari also noted that deliveries of the Roma and 812 Competizione dwindled in the second quarter as both models approached the end of their production lifecycles. The Roma Spider continues to do good business, helping to bolster those Q2 numbers for Ferrari, alongside the Purosangue and the 296 GTS.

Ferrari is headed for an eventful few years, with plans to unveil the LaFerrari successor within the next six months. The first electric Prancing Horse, likely an SUV, will debut in late 2025, followed by a rumored second electric SUV. To accommodate these new models, Ferrari has expanded its Maranello headquarters with a new production facility, the e-building, dedicated to electric vehicles and hybrids.
