Tom Petty's Rangoon Red 1965 Ford Mustang is up for auction on Bonhams Cars, with an estimated value of $25,000-$35,000. The car, powered by its popular 289ci OHV V8 engine, remains well-preserved.

Tom Petty was an American singer, songwriter, and guitarist renowned for his role as the leader and frontman of the rock bands Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers and Mudcrutch. He passed away in October 2017 at the age of 66, leaving behind several items that are up for auction, including the striking red Mustang.

Unveiled at the New York World's Fair in April 1964 and conceived by the former President of Ford, Lee Iacocca, the Ford Mustang quickly became a nationwide sensation. Its blend of sporty performance, personal luxury, and distinctive styling not only captured the public's imagination but also established a new 'Pony Car' market. This innovation sparked intense competition among Detroit's leading automakers.

Ford initially projected first-year sales of approximately 100,000 units for the Mustang. Remarkably, this milestone was achieved in just four months, making the Mustang's launch the most successful in automotive history. By 1966, over one million Mustangs were already on American roads. Today, the Mustang stands as the only original 'Pony Car'—outlasting rivals like the Camaro and Firebird to remain in continuous production since its debut.

Regarding Petty's Mustang, with chassis number 5F08D143605, the muscle car was acquired by him over two decades ago in 2002 and will be transferred directly from the musician's wife. The vehicle retains its original single 4-barrel carburetor engine, which delivers 210 bhp at 4,400 rpm, paired with a 4-speed automatic transmission. It also features front disc brakes while the rear is equipped with drum brakes.

This stunning convertible left the Dearborn, Michigan factory featuring a rare D-code 289ci V8 engine. Capable of running on various fuel octanes, this engine was a more refined option compared to the solid-lifter K-Code variant, offering both performance and versatility.

The listing highlights the car as an iconic American pony car formerly owned by a legendary American musician. With limited use by the Petty family, the Mustang has benefited from previous restoration and now stands out with its excellent condition, showcasing a range of desirable features and authentic details that emphasize its rich heritage.

Additionally, Bonhams will auction the personal collection of the legendary American rock star in an online sale from August 29 to September 10. This collection features Tom Petty's Yamaha Grand Piano (estimated value: $5,000 – $7,000) and a recording console (estimated value: $600 – $800), alongside a selection of personal items including clothing, a typewriter, ashtrays, and Petty's writing desk, engraved with his and his wife's initials (estimated value: $300 – $500).
