Most tennis fans are understandably focused on the Summer Olympics in Paris. Meanwhile, it is hard court season back in the United States as players are gearing up for the US Open later this month.

After a disappointing exit from the Atlanta Open last week, Ben Shelton has advanced to the semifinals of the DC Open. However, it was not without some controversy.

On Friday night, Shelton defeated Denis Shapovalov in the DC Open in two sets: 7-6, 6-6. The match ended on an unusual note, thanks to a controversial default call.

Shelton had a triple match point on Shapovalov when the Canadian shouted colorful language at a fan in the crowd, resulting in a code violation for unsportsmanlike conduct. An ATP supervisor was quickly called to the court, and a debate ensued.

Shapovalov invoked multiple arguments when protesting the call but had no luck. Shelton shook his head in disbelief and reluctantly took the victory. Shelton will face Flavio Cobolli at 7:00 p.m. EST on Saturday night in the DC Open Semifinals.
