Any lingering ghosts Daniil Medvedev might have had from his five-set Australian Open match against Jannik Sinner have been exorcised. Medvedev defeated Sinner 6-7(7), 6-4, 7-6(4), 2-6, 6-3 in the quarterfinals at Wimbledon.

The lengthy five-set match lasted exactly four hours at Centre Court on Tuesday afternoon. Both players were pushed to the physical limit, with Sinner's physiotherapist seemingly treating his athlete for dizziness.

After the match, Medvedev was asked about staying sharp when Sinner came back strong after taking a break. He replied, "It's actually very tough. One moment, I could feel he didn't move that well. It's always tricky because you wanna play more points to make him suffer a bit more… in a good way."

The crowd laughed at Medvedev's cheeky comment before he said, "At the same time, you know that he at one point is gonna say 'Ok, I can't run anymore. So I'm going to go full power.' And that's what he did. He had set points to win the third set. In a way, I'd maybe prefer to not have this situation. Everything is well when it ends well. So I'm pretty happy."

Today's win was another reminder of Medvedev's resume. He has now advanced to his ninth Grand Slam semifinals (second at Wimbledon) and defeated the World No. 1 seven times throughout the course of his career.

Medvedev will face the winner of Carlos Alcaraz and Tommy Paul on Friday, July 12. Tennis fans can follow Sports Illustrated's Serve on SI for all the most important news from the sport.
