Roger Federer Explains Why Jannik Sinner Deserves #1 Ranking
Retirement has not slowed down Roger Federer. The legendary tennis player's days of competing on the courts are over, but he has made a smooth transition into the next phase of his life.
Federer has shaken up the sneaker industry with On, dropped a new documentary, and provides fresh commentary for the sport. In a recent interview with the sports media outlet Gazzetta, Federer offered an honest opinion of Jannik Sinner.
Federer complimented Sinner's demeanor and said he deserved the world's top-ranked spot for men's singles players. "It's fantastic that an Italian is No. 1. Sinner deserves it; he's a great guy, very sweet. I follow him with great interest."
Naturally, comparisons between Sinner and Carlos Alcaraz's rivalry were made with the legendary battles between Federer and Rafael Nadal. Federer did not shy away from the comparisons.
"Sinner and Alcaraz like me and Nadal? It's still early, but Jannik and Carlos are from the same generation and are very strong. It seems to me that they respect each other a lot. They started off on the right foot; theirs promises to be a great challenge. It's nice to see them play."
Federer is right that is still early to draw too many comparisons between the two rivarlies. He and Nadal played each other 40 times, with Nadal leading 24–16 overall, including 14–10 in finals.
Sinner and Alcaraz have faced off only nine times, with Sinner having on five of the nine matches. Nevertheless, it is exciting to see what the future holds for this exciting rivalry.
